Gordon Richards has been running the Hickory Zoo of Mount Vernon since
February of 1999. The responsibilities were passed onto him when his uncle
went into retirement.
Gordon suffered a heart attack several months ago and hasn't been able to
keep up the work flow. We would like to help
him bring back the excitements of Hickory Shadows Zoo to our community.
As of right now the animal count is low, however Gordon would like to bring
back some big cats at the zoo as soon as the animal pins and other work
is completed. Currently the zoo has 2 wild mustangs, 1 pot belly pig,
raccoons', a skunk, duck, geese, and of course who can forget the 17yr old
beautiful black bear named "Daisy Bang". Daisy is a very smart bear, she can
count with her paws among other entertaining tricks with her caretaker
Gordon!
Volunteer your time at the zoo anytime during the Zoo Hours of
Friday-Sunday, 10AM-6PM. All you need to do is show up with a pair of
working hands, Gordon will provide materials and show you what he needs
help with. Volunteer work will include some of the following duties: Pouring
concrete floors for the animal pins (Concrete is very much needed at this
time), pulling weeds, and other basic cleaning tasks.
